Spiraculum, 2023
Floating several feet above the ground, it hangs from a motorized sensor that begins to spin, activated as visitors approach. This spinning motion enhances the structure’s shape, a spiralized welded iron armature lined with a variety of dichroic, iridescent, beveled and textured glass pieces soldered into the gaps between the thin metallic rods. Divinorum leaves sections of the frame open and un-glassed, and the overall effect is similar to a double helix or spiralized DNA strands expanding and contracting.
Fixed LED lights hit the rotating sculpture creating spiral strips of light and shadow punctuated throughout with spots of color from the stained glass pieces. Under the sculpture is a circular mirror creating an endless loop of swirling strands, reflective of a major theme in Divinorum’s work: “...the human connection with nature and the organic expressions that emerge from that relationship.”
